IsaLu Ishii : A Journey of Artistic Discovery: The Evolution of an Unconventional Vision

Emerging from a background in Italian language and literature, this London-based artist's journey into the world of art was anything but conventional. Originally from Bulgaria, she spent five years in Florence before making a bold move to London—despite not speaking the language—a decision that proved transformative. Though drawing was an early passion, self-doubt and an unsuccessful attempt at art school led to a nearly two-decade hiatus from creative expression.

It was Instagram and the work of independent artists that reignited her artistic flame. In a bid to cultivate a distinctive style, she turned to an unconventional process—cutting, layering, and reversing images—to create her striking ‘Blue Boys’ series, intricate 3D portraits crafted from paper. Though captivating, the process was time-intensive, leading her to explore alternative mediums.

Her artistic identity took shape in a moment of spontaneity—an abstract male face with signature scarlet lips, a motif that evolved into her vibrant, energetic figures. Described as camp, queer, and joyful, her art is an organic outpouring of movement and expression, drawing inspiration from her ballet background and the rich artistic influences of her childhood. She thrives in the unplanned, allowing figures to interact and compositions to emerge naturally.

Her rising prominence in the art world was cemented in 2023 when Mortal Machine Gallery in New Orleans invited her to participate in a group exhibition. Since then, she has caught the attention of influential figures in contemporary art. Currently, she is preparing for an upcoming group show curated by Trevor Read at Adorn The Common Gallery in London, along with additional exhibitions in the US and UK.

From literary studies to the vibrant world of contemporary art, her journey exemplifies the unpredictable and deeply personal nature of creative evolution. Her works, bursting with life, wit, and charm, continue to captivate audiences, inviting them into a world where spontaneity reigns and joy is paramount.
